We are excited to introduce our GMRS radio with IP67 waterproofing, 5 days of battery life, and 5-watts of power for optimal range. This radio is fully compatible with our award-winning FRS Mountain Radio.
Designed and tested in the mountains and rivers of the Colorado Rockies, the radio is rugged with protective rubber padding and a shatterproof LED screen. Each radio is hand-tested to IP67 waterproofing standards (1 meter submersion) and includes a water-shedding design for quick communication in white-water.
The 5 Watt Radio maximizes two critical aspects of a backcountry radio: battery life and range. The radio includes a specialized 1800 mAH battery that achieves around 5 days on a single charge, even in frigid conditions (-20°F). The radio transmits the highest GMRS power (5-watts) permitted under FCC regulations. The max range is over 35 miles, however, 2 to 8 miles is typical in backcountry terrain. For more info on range, please see our range testing video.
Easily attach the 5 Watt Radio to packs and other gear using the integrated steel gator clip (with 360° rotation) and backup leash. The radio is also compatible with our Carabiner Attachment which comes with either the Quantum ultralight climbing carabiner or locking carabiner that we crafted with our local Colorado partner, Trango.
The 5 Watt Radio includes useful features for the backcountry, including access to 11 weather channels and NOAA weather alerts, as well as dual-channel monitoring and transmitting. The radio’s GMRS designation unlocks 8 repeater channels to relay & extend your transmission range, as well as a removable antenna.
Each radio comes with a compact and high-performance 7.5cm antenna installed, and our longer 17cm antenna is included in each box. The 17cm antenna moderately improves range and boosts weather channel reception.
Compatible accessories:
Waterproof Hand Mic – especially popular for Backcountry Skiers
Carabiner Attachment – a modular version of our original Mountain Radio attachment system with an ultralight carabiner or locking carabiner option.
Universal Mount – multiple mounting options for any outdoor adventure.
Whip Antenna - improve signal strength and audio quality in challenging conditions

Customer Reviews
- NBNick B.Verified ReviewerI recommend this productRated 5 out of 5 stars5 days agoSo glad I spent the extra money!
I went with the 5 Watt Rocky Talkie and could not be happier. I did extensive research on just about every walkie talkie I could find and every time I came back the this unit.
What was important to me?
-Range: This unit has interchangeable antennas so depending on the situation I can get a little more range, if needed, with the whip antenna.
-Ease of Use: can my wife and kids pick these up and start using them right away…YES!
-Durability: Walkie Talkies get dropped, it’s unavoidable. I have only had them a short time and both have hit the ground. They still work great.
-Waterproof: I went fly fishing, dropped one in the river, pulled it out with mo problems. The mic didn’t even get distorted from the water.
-Size: I needed it to be compact. Some Walkie’s are huge and not practical in most situations. These are compact (they are a bit heavy, but I see this as a positive, as they are a quality built product).
They are not filled with a ton of useless bells and whistles, just the essentials. If this is what you want/need stop looking and purchase. I have seen comments that they are expensive, but something is only expensive if it doesn’t bring value. These units are packed with value!!!! (This IS NOT a paid review. I paid full price for both units.)

I’ve bought a few radios for snowmobiling and splitboarding but haven’t had good luck. Started with the Midland GTX1000 GMRS, which had troubles talking to other brands and the handset isn’t waterproof so it stopped working after a few days of use. I then bought a Baofeng and while cheap, was so confusing to use I returned it. Not what I’m after. The Rocky (only used two days), is easy to setup for any channel, works well and has intuitive controls. Exactly what I was after! Hopefully it keeps working well for years to come because I think radios are the most important safety tool we have for most situations, so it’s key to be able to rely on them.

Works great! Use it around our property which has some hills and tons of trees over 1.5 miles very happy with our purchase!

We got these so we could keep in touch while cross country skiing. No matter how far apart or what hill (or hills) are in between the reception is crystal clear and static free. These are a terrific light weight addition for safety. The FCC license was easy to get and is good for 10 years.

This is my first GMRS only radio as I have been a ham for a long time. Something about this little guy looked appealing so I gave it a try and I love it. Very very robust and I spend a lot of time in the shower talking on local GMRS repeaters so the water shedding feature is amazing. Some of my dual band handhelds are water proof but the water clogs up the mic and renders them useless, not this little guy it just trucks right along! Thank you Rocky Talkie!
