The Rocky Talkie Mountain Radio is our award-winning, license-free radio, designed and tested in the Colorado Rockies. Built with climbers and skiers in mind, this compact and durable radio is ready for any adventure where communication is critical.
A specialized lithium-ion battery delivers 3–5 days of life, even in extreme cold (-20°F). For durability, the radio features a shatterproof LED screen, a tough thermoplastic covering, and a secure carabiner + back-up leash system—far stronger than fragile plastic clips found on other radios.
The Mountain Radio transmits at the maximum power allowed without a license (2 watts), with a tested max range of 35+ miles—though 1–5 miles is typical in backcountry terrain. For more info on range, please see our range testing video or blog post.
Simple and reliable, the Mountain Radio works right out of the box with zero setup required. Its five intuitive buttons and quick privacy code access make communication effortless and interference-free.

This is a short note to thank you for developing such a solid, reliable radio. Four years ago, you donated a pair of radios to the Ouray School District outdoor education class. My students and I spend our class periods hiking, climbing, skiing, and generally playing in the mountains. Getting back to school a little late is okay, but loosing a student is not an option, and having reliable communication is a huge help in keeping everyone safe and accounted for. They work in any kind of weather, and they work as well today as the day we first got them. Thank you!!!

Thanks to Rocky Talkie for providing these radios so our group leaders could communicate with each other on trail. They are durable, easy to use, and worked even in wooded areas when we weren't too far from each other.

What a great radio! We purchased 2 for a remote canoe trip so we could communicate while paddling and on portages. The range is excellent- in dense bush, up hills, around terrain etc. Battery life was superb. Easily 2 days of moderate use with no need to charge. Charged nicely with a small solar panel. The only reason these are not 5-star is that they aren’t waterproof, but we knew that. Thank you Rocky Talkie!!!
