Our Company
Rocky Talkie launched in late 2019 with its signature product, a backcountry radio made for climbers and skiers (view our backstory video here). We are known for our commitment to making easy-to-use and durable radios for use in the backcountry, as well as best in class customer service. Rocky Talkie has a rapidly growing base of happy customers (see reviews here) in the USA and Canada. Although we initially designed our radio with climbers and skiers in mind, the radio has been adopted by a wide variety of outdoor enthusiasts and commercial applications. Our team has other products in the works for launch in 2023.
Our team is driven every day by the belief that better communication in the backcountry will save lives. As part of this mission, we donate $2 per radio to search and rescue teams around the country.
The Role
We are seeking an entrepreneurial minded, highly creative engineer to join our team. In this role you will assist in designing, developing, and manufacturing new products at Rocky Talkie. We hope to bring our simple, rugged, and activity focused design principles to a variety of new products to improve safety in adventure sports and inject new ideas into an old and outdated 2-way radio industry. We are looking for someone who is eager to lead the full product development cycle; from creating specifications and design documents for new products to working directly with our manufacturers to execute on the product vision and final product testing. The role is hybrid: in-person 1 to 2 days a week in San Francisco, with other days being fully remote.
In this role, you would lead many aspects of product development at Rocky Talkie and would work directly with the Head of Product / Co-Founder. While our product development will have an emphasis on electronics and specifically RF circuits, this role will require flexibility and expertise in a wide range of areas, making it suitable for a generalist or “renaissance engineer” with a strong EE background. We are expanding rapidly, and your role will grow along with the company.
Areas of involvement include:
- New product concept and design
- Determining device specifications, and real-use-case testing metrics
- 3D modeling and prototyping
- Managing circuit design and component selection
- Assessing manufacturing process and assembly plans
- Forming strong partnerships with suppliers domestic and international
- Drive failure analysis investigations and implement factory floor QA processes
- Implementing robust product testing plans (impact, water, temperature, battery, lifespan, ect)
- You are the proud parent of multiple new products for Rocky Talkie. You have personally taken our products out into the wild and tested them to ensure they deliver excellent customer experiences.
- You helped build out the Rocky Talkie engineering team and capabilities, bringing more design knowledge in-house and have leveraged contract engineering to fill in gaps in our growing team.
- You have developed close relationships with our suppliers and built strong testing regiments to ensure the production to manufacture them with high reliability.
Required:
- 5 yrs experience in product design of electronic devices (enclosure, schematic and PCB layout analysis, assembly, testing)
- BS/MS/PhD Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or equivalent technical degree
- Outdoor sports enthusiast
- Leadership experience
Desired:
- Outdoor industry consumer product design experience
- RF/Wireless circuit design experience
- Experience with Altium Designer (or other PCB design software)
- CAD modeling (flexible on software)
- Design for Manufacturing and experience working with international manufacturing
- Acoustics and acoustic enclosure design experience
- Waterproof electronics design/manufacturing experience
